Biography & Artist's Statements

I've been writing and teaching for over 25 years, graduating first from the University of Minnesota with degrees in journalism and French, which took me to New York as an editor and Paris as a writer for eight years.  I finally saw the light and came West, and did an M.A. in creative writing at U.C.-Boulder.  I've authored two nonfiction books in travel and women's health, a collection of poems, Desert Water (Lithic Press, 2009), and stories, essays and poems which appear in American Fiction, The Writer, Rosebud, the Taos Review, New Delta Review, the Denver Post and others.  This work won two state literature awards, many prizes, and nine residencies at artist colonies around the country.  Currently, I'm aiming to finish a novel, Girl in the Sea, by the end of 2014.
I've taught at eight universities and colleges in the West, including Linfield, Lewis and Clark, University of Wyoming and Portland State University, and directed a writing program for three years at WSU/Vancouver before moving to G.J. in 1999.  Here, I've taught workshops for ten years in fiction and nonfiction, and held women's writing retreats in wilderness, on river trips and in retreat centers such as St. Benedict's and Benet Hill monasteries, and the Crestone Mountain Zen Center.
In 2010, I founded the Western Colorado Writers' Forum, the first nonprofit community writing organization in Grand Junction. After four years of directing the Forum, I now simply coordinate the Forum's educational programs (Writers in the Schools & Voices of the Grand Valley), and sit on the board, and do grant writing for nonprofits.  There's a wall of nonfiction books and novels in my office which I've edited to help others get their work published; hence, I also work extensively with writers of all kinds as an editor.  Please see www.sandradorr.com.  Thanks.  Good luck with your projects.
