Biography & Artist's Statements

Born and raised in Grand Junction with family that arrived in 1882.  My Grandmother homesteaded on the Redlands in 1909 and after she married, she and my Grandfather sold her place and moved a little ways away to settle in 1914.  I still live in the house they built in 1914.  It includes Grandma's original cabin that she built about a quarter mile south up against the Monument.  It is where my mother was raised as well as my sister and me.

With the Monument for a lifetime backdrop and hiking through its canyons it is the major inspiration along with horses that inspires both my art and my writing.   I have been painting and writing most of my life.  I haven't painted oils for many years but have been thinking of getting back to it now that I'm retired.  Watercolors are much faster to produce and don't need a special place to paint.  And watercolors have that special attribute that surprises the artist--sometimes pleasantly and sometimes not.  But oils have a soft glow about them that no other paint produces.

I have displayed my art at the Working Artist Gallery since Karen Wright opened it way back in 1991 (it may be 1992--funny I can remember the beginning, originally out on North Avenue, but not the date).  I still display there with the current owner Jackie  Moore at 520 Main St. in Grand Junction.

I also have an online store at www.zazzle.com/totally_otoole where my art is printed on greeting cards, bags, pillows, mugs and prints.

My history and background gave me the desire to write as well.  I am the Redlands Historian and Editor, writer and publisher of the newsletter for Mesa County Historical Society.
