Biography & Artist's Statements

Michelle Pattee

Michelle grew up surrounded by the natural beauty of Colorado’s Western Slope in a family of artists. At a young age, she began expressing her love of nature through pencil drawings - she could always be found with her drawing pad and pencil. The Colorado landscapes and its diverse wildlife have become the foundation of her life’s work.

Completely self-taught, Michelle discovered Scratchboard twenty years ago. With no formal instruction, she intentionally avoids all outside influences. Scratchboard is a board base, layered with white clay, then coated with India ink. Working in this medium is incredibly difficult. One mistake might completely change, or even ruin, a project. The results though are beautiful, and it has become her favorite medium. She has mastered this delicate process and uses it to bring the world around her to life. Her ambition to move, reveal and inspire people is at the heart of every piece she creates. Her passion for life is reflected through her art. When she is not working in her home studio in Mesa, Colorado she can be found volunteering with Therapy Horses at Harmony Acres Equestrian Center, located in Fruita, CO.

“When I begin creating a piece, as it emerges, some creature will demand to come through and form on the board before me, saying, “Hello!” I must follow this intuition and try to step aside and allow for this spontaneity. Having that relationship with the art makes every piece personal.”

Michelle’s work is in many private collections in the United States and the UK, including Albert Alarr, Director of "Days of Our Lives" and John Hendricks, owner of the Discovery Channel. She has taken top awards in many juried exhibitions. She is a member of the Glenwood Springs Art Guild in Glenwood Springs, CO; the Western Colorado Center for the Arts in Grand Junction, CO and the Association of Miniature Artists.
