Ode to A Cottonwood Ode to A Cottonwood Crystal Aspens Awakening A Life with Promise Hands To Heaven

Biography & Artist's Statements

Originally from Denmark, Maja Sommersted lived in Togo, Africa, and England before coming to the United States as a freshman in high school. She discovered at an early age that art is truly a universal language, because even when she did not speak the language, she could still express herself through her art.

Traveling so much as a child, she was also exposed not just to different cultures but also to the art and the museums. Maja got to experience the art of Monet, Picasso, William Blake, Turner and the Danish group of painters from Skagen up close. She received a B.A. and art teacher certification at Fort Lewis College in Durango.

That her family ended up in Colorado, Maja considers a true blessing. The Colorado blue skies are a constant inspiration for the pure and vivid blues in her oil paintings, as well as her three young daughters who inspired the most recent series of paintings about motherhood. Her watercolors are very spontanious and playful with subtle overlaying images from her childhood and heritage.
